Max Brenner, Chocolate by the Bald Man (New York, NY)

[ts]
JS and I met up with our younger cousin for lunch while we were at New York. She took us to Max Brenner at Union Square.

Apparently, this Max is a bald man.

Although JS and I were trying to save stomach space for more eating after lunch, I couldn't help but get something chocolate during the meal. I decided a drink should do the trick.

[ts]
I was tempted by the hot chocolate just because it was served in what they called a "hug mug", but decided on their SUCKAO, a "Do-It-Yourself" Concentrated Hot Chocolate Shot.

[ts]
It came like so. There's some milk above a tealight, some chopped chocolate, extra milk, and their metal straw for "sucking" the chocolate. One is supposed to melt the chocolate in the milk oneself.

[ts]
As you can see, it was a messy affair for me. The chocolate was nice, but it took so long to melt and become smooth!

[ts]
If you feel so inclined, check out their menu, as they do have a lot of these flairs (hug mug, suckao straw, Alice cup, etc.).

As for the food, JS ordered the Asian Chicken and Soba Noodle Salad with Sesame Peanut Dressing. Look at that big pile of fried wonton skins!

[ts]
I ordered a dish under the "Food on a Stick" category, the Thai-style Chicken Satays.

I don't know why we went "Asian" all of a sudden. Maybe it was because they seemed to be the lighter dishes on the menu. As I mentioned, we were saving stomach space for more food after lunch!

The food was actually not bad; they were done well, considering we chose the "Asian" dishes. ;) JS and I figure that a place serving horrible food won't last very long in NYC.

[ts]
The restaurant space was huge. There was a long counter with various dessert/snack items on display (cookies, cakes, etc.), and there was a separate retail section as well.

[ts]
Although I was a bit full, I decided I had to get their "Dark Cookie" (chocolate cookie with chocolate chunks) because it looked so thick and chewy!

I bought it to-go, and ate it the next day.
(I was so full during the rest of this day that I didn't get to eat the cookie!)

[ts]
It didn't seem to suffer from being a day old.

[ts]
Ooooh, chocolate-y!

  1. The cookie looks really good (the drink less so). I'm surprised you didn't just go ahead and get all dessert/pastries..

In their defense, that photo of the drink was before the chocolate had melted nicely and become smooth. =)

That cookie better be good! It was about $4! ;)
